Huh?

That is the only word I can use to describe this day. Huh?

  • I woke up to cold, cold, cold
  • Did some yoga and got a LARGE latte to warm me up
  • Got to school and 20 minutes later, I found out that the construction site next door had broken a gas pipe, which was leaking in our school..no bueno
  • Got the 5 kids that had already arrived and prepared to evacuate and send them home (I was excited, and secretly planning my day at home)
  • Started the evacuation process, only to find out that the situation was under control and we were staying – It completely threw me off
  • I had only 5 kids in my class (more trickled in later…for a whopping total of 10 for the day), so I babysat all day. We couldn’t teach anything because we would just have to re-teach the material tomorrow when the rest of the class was there
  • It started SNOWING an hour later. That’s right, SNOWING. It’s September 21st.
  • I had a meeting with the special ed. department/a parent, and was basically blubbering the whole time because I was so sad about the child’s disability and his lack of progress. I didn’t know I cared so much.
  • It was the end of our no-grocery-week-challenge, but I couldn’t go to the store because I was too cold. Haha. I’m such a wimp.

So here is a meal made on the 15th day without groceries.

I thawed/browned some ground turkey that had been hiding in the back of the freezer and added canned tomatoes.

Then I added the lentils I had crock-potted yesterday. Broth and all.

Then, topped the mess with hummus.

What’s better than a bowl of soup on a snowy evening?!

(It’s not still snowing, but in my mind, it is a snowy evening.)

I have to go have another bowl – it was that good. I will post the proper instructions on my recipe page.

I am such a creature of habit that the lack of routine today threw me way off – I could hardly function. Not unhappy, just weird.

Here’s to some normalcy tomorrow!

  1. Ick, I hate school days like that! Last year on Halloween everyone was freaking out because there was supposed to be a gang initiation (my school was in a super bad area) so I taught a grand total of 13 kids (that was from 3 classes)!! Also, I totally get how you feel about the special needs kid, those situations can be really frustrating. Hope things are looking up!

  2. I’m a teacher as well and I hear where you’re coming from – the kids and I both thrive on routine and when it suddenly changes, I feel thrown off my teacher game all day long!

And I think it’s wonderful that you care so much about your special ed. student; it shows that you’re a dedicated teacher!

  3. Today was an odd day in my world too. I looked down at the clock only twice at work today, and the second time I looked down it was past 5:30, time for me to go home!

Your dinner looks delish. I had some chili tonight. It is finally feeling more fall like here in Minneapolis, so it was the perfect evening to bring out the soup!

    Have a wonderful evening :)

  4. Well…we as parents were all messed up cause we thought we were supposed to go get them…then next thing we knew everything was fine. Plus worrying about our kiddos! I thrive on routine as well so I totally get that!!! My girls were so happy to not have homework…sorry you couldn’t teach and just had to “babysit”. When they came home we had hot chocolate together. It was a nice moment. I finally had to turn the heat on when they came home. I couldn’t stand the cold anymore. Then they told me they saw snow! I didn’t see it…I’m getting sick so this cold weather cold weather is making me not very happy. :( I referenced you in my blog post today. Oh and my car is dead, dead. Grrrr! Thanks for sharing your stories w/us!

  5. that is totally bizarre! snowing, september…that sounds like something that would happen in Wisconsin!

tomorrow will be a fabulous day – grocery shopping, warmer temps (i assume it can only go up from here) and it’s one day closer to the weekend.

    love the makeshift meal :)

  6. That’s kind of awesome that you had snow yesterday! I love snow (being originally from Maine) and can’t wait for snowboard season to begin. Great job on dinner too, I love it when things like that just come together.
