Don’t Even Ask

Sometimes I swear I’m retarded.

I started the day feeling so organized. At 7:05, I carried my coffee, school bag, laptop and lunch to my car, and started it with the heat on full blast to take the chill off. Then I went back inside to grab my phone, and take out the trash. After hauling the garbage can to the street, I walked back in the garage to get in my car. I pulled on the door handle and…it was locked. Wait. But my stuff is in there. The car is running. Meeker left his car at his parents’ house. I have to be at school in 15 minutes.

I wish I looked this sexy while I pulled on the door handle to my car.

I did what any mature 24 year old would do, and started crying and ran upstairs screaming “Meeeekkkeerr!!! Help!!” – my patient, level-headed husband arose from his slumber and grabbed a hanger to attempt a break into our car. While he was working on breaking and entering, I ran inside and made some teary phone calls to (a) my school (b) a locksmith.

Luckily, someone was able to cover my class for a while, and I paced around the house for 30 minutes while the locksmith rushed took his sweet time getting to our house.

$98 and 45 minutes later I sprinted in the door of my classroom and found two educational assistants trying to find the math tests for my class. All was well. Then I listened to twenty-five stories about my students’ parents similarly locking themselves out of houses and cars.

Don’t even ask how I managed to lock my keys (and the rest of my important belongings) into a running car. Don’t even ask.

Backtrack to breakfast – before the lunacy.

One bowl of oatmeal cooked with water, and a tablespoon of cocoa powder and a drizzle of sunflower seed butter. It was mediocre. The sun butter was definitely the best part.

Lunch was leftovers plus two carrots, two dates, a handful of peanuts and a vitatop.

The leftovers, dates/peanuts and carrots were delicious. But, I’m sorry to say – I’m not a fan of vitaops. I really want to like them! But they are dry and kind of bland. I’ve concluded that I would rather just indulge and have a chocolate muffin or piece of cake – and cut back somewhere else during my day. Diet cake just isn’t for me. But, I will say that the little tops are very convenient – and I can see the appeal of a 100-calorie-indulgent-tasting treat.

Dinner was decidedly orange.

The orange blob is steamed and mashed parsnips, a turnip and three carrots. Surrounded by cheetahs and eaten by romantic candlelight.

Meeker’s grandpa made that candle log you see in the background – such a crafty Papa. You can buy the same thing here for $50! Crazy.

I’m so happy that this day is wrapping up and The Biggest Loser is on soooooon.

I will not lock my keys in the car tomorrow. I will not lock my keys in the car tomorrow. I will not lock my keys in the car tomorrow…

Have you ever locked yourself out (or in)?

  1. Yes, I locked the keys in my running car with the air conditioner blasting… while 12 Meals on Wheels, for elderly people, were cooling off rapidly. I was pregnant.. and crying… when I called my husband with WRONG directions to drive and bring me keys to my car on his key ring. It took him an extra 20 minutes to find me bc of the wrong address! This is just another story to add to your many student stories….. So sorry about your crazy start. I bet tomorrow will be wonderful!

  2. OH no! That has definitely happened to me, all I can say is thank god for AAA! And luckily I wasn’t running to work, I am glad that your crisis was mostly averted though! That log candle is so creative and I love the look of your orange dinner.

  3. The first thing Ava said to me when I picked her up today from school was, “Mrs. Unger was late to school.” Naturally I asked why and she informed me you locked your keys in your car. Now…why on earth do you not have a car that automatically will not lock on the driver’s side while running may I ask??? ;D Just teasing. I may have an old crappy car but that’s one feature it has. Weird. Leave it to Volvo. Anyway I have been locked out before but it was NOT my fault. The kids locked us out of the house once. I had to cut the screen out of the front door and unlock it so we could get back in cause I had no cell phone on me and no one was home on the block cause I’m like the only one that stays home…everyone else works. I was not happy with the kiddos. At least you have interesting stories to write about on your blog! ;D

  4. aw girl, i can’t believe that happened! i’ve never done it, but trust me i would have freaked out just like you did!

I just got done watching biggest loser, and OMGGGGGG i’m like sooooooooo excited for next week you have no idea! i can’t wait to hear what you have to say about it!

I wish u liked vitatops! i have to say it, but i’m IN LOVE with them! but hey they aren’t for everyone right?!

    xoxoxo girl

  5. I’ve never done that, but one time in student teaching I way overslept and I called in and pretended I had car trouble. But then when I got to school one of my students told me I had sheet lines on my face!!! :) I’m glad it all worked out for you today.

  6. apparently if you lock yourself out in Germany it costs 300 Euros to have someone come and help you get back in. Not sure if that is for cars as well, but for locking yourself out of your home. Pricey!! We gave an extra key to a friend who lives close by just in case.

I have locked myself out of my house and my car in the past. Since we got our Prius it’s been great because you literally can’t lock yourself out of that car. If you attempt to lock it while the key is still inside it beeps at you! LOve it!

  7. Oh gosh, don’t feel too bad! I’m the queen of locking oneself out. ;) I locked myself out of my car at least 3 times (two times while it was running and I had to call the fire station…they came in all their glory and flashing lights while I was at work—pretty embarrassing ;)

I’m pretty sure I didn’t look like that girl pulling at the door either, unfortunately…haha. :D

  8. Oh, girl. I HAVE locked myself out. I went from living at home where we had a garage door keypad, so I never had a housekey. Now I am married, we don’t have auto garage doors yet, and I CONSTANTLY lock my keys in the house. My husband works an hour away, too. It’s bad! I feel for ya!

  9. I’ve been locked out- garage door opener decided to kill itself one time this summer. Bad news bears. In other news, those mashed parsnips are a fab idea! I must try them.. I do not eat parsnips nearly enough.

Have a wonderful day Miss Katie! Eat some cake today, all will be fine! :)

  10. that is so funny! I’ve never locked my keys in my car while it was running, but i used to lock my keys in my car so much…like all of the time! One time dave and i went into target and were shopping, when we were getting ready to leave i was looking for my keys and couldnt find them…we searched the store high and low and dave went out to the car to see if i had locked them in the car….low and behold the car was in the space running unlocked. We had gotten out of the car and just left it running. We must have been in deep conversation or something because neither one of us remember doing it! lol!!

  11. Fortunately, my car doors won’t lock when the key is in the ignition. But I’ve done it with older cars. And I had a friend who’s key BROKE off while her car was running. That was a fun one.

  12. Oh that totally sounds like something I would do. I can be so spacey. Glad everything turned out alright though. Your orange dinner looks amazing, and that candle log is awesome!

  13. ahhh sorry about the debacle! haha but you tell a good story :) i havent tried the double chocolate dream vitas! as far as vitas go, i like them in yogurt but not alone. YES i have locked myself out a lot.

  14. Oh my gosh what a morning! You needed that latte today sista! If it helps, Graci said nothing about your morning! She did tell me quite funningly(not a word) that you have to get organized at home tomorrow and that cracked me up! Anywho when the kids were small I locked my keys in the car at least 3 times a month. We had AAA just for the key unlock! Now if you pay you could take the receipt and ask your insurance co. if they will reimburse you???? That is odd that the doors locked…must of been b/c you turned the car on and shut the door…it ‘thought’ you were inside?
Enjoy your day off….all teachers know its heck to pay when ya take off! ha At least Friday is a field tripper.

  15. hasn’t this happened to everybody in some way shape or form?! ah regardless, it sucks. :( i’m sorry you had to go through it on your way to work.

I once stuck the key in the door(its an old car) to unlock it, and the key broke and got stuck in the door! Long story short… I now have two separate keys for the ignition and the door. ughh. :/

Your plate of orange makes up for it though! Tasty.. :)

  16. gah, isn’t it ridiculous how expensive it is for someone to come and unlock your door in approximately 5 seconds? seriously.

your dinner looks divine! i love the idea of mashing up all those root veggies together!

  17. Kake,
I locked my running Pathfinder (it locked itself when I shut the door – dummy feature if you ask me!) at 2:30 a.m. in Gunnison. Mind you, Gunnison. It ran for 2 hours until a Locksmith felt bad enough for me to come and let me in it! It was a night like tonight… FREEZING cold! At least I was at a friend’s house. ;)
