The next big thing

Whee!! Good morning! I started mine off with an incredibly sweaty spin class at 6 this morning. Now I’m feeling energized and ready to tackle the day. I ate a banana before spin, and then came home to shower and cool off/rehydrate with watermelon…

And trail mix and coffee. Neither of those helped with the re-hydration, but they tasted good.

Walnuts, almonds, PB Bumpers cereal, coconut, dried cranberries, sunflower seeds (on the bottom)

I love coffee.

Okay, so the last challenge I made for myself was running fast. Done. I can now run fast. However…

I have a confession: I cannot do one single push-up.

Sure, I can do them from my knees, and I can do a wimpy version from my toes where I only go about halfway to the floor, but I want to be able to do REAL push-ups. Like military style two-inches-from-the-ground push ups. So my next big thing is going to be a push-up challenge! I know Teri did one of these a while back, but I was to chicken to join in, so I’m doing it now.

I will be able to do at least 25 consecutive push-ups by the end of this month. (I’m scared just typing that.) When I accomplish that goal, I will up the number to 50. I’m really scared, but I’m going to do it anyway. Care to join?

Also, keep those questions coming!! What do you want to know about me??

  1. What a great challenge! I should try that too…my weak little arms pop every time I go up during push-ups! Pull ups are even worse……

  2. homecookedem says:

I miss spin class!! Such a great workout!! That watermelon looks sooo refreshing and delicious!! :)

  3. I think you can definitely do it! The best tip I was every given was to do 50 pushups a day. Anyway – like 5 sets or 10, 10 sets of 5, regardless, do them everyday. I’ve been doing that since I was 14!

  4. I often reside to the “girl pushups”. I can’t do many real ones before I lose it… lol

I wish you luck on the challenge- I may not join, but you’ve inspired me to start throwing a few more into my workout every week!

  5. I’m in. I’ve been slacking in the upper body department after I finished a 6 week weight training program back in May. I miss how strong I felt, but the 2 hours at the gym after a 12 hour day really got to me and put me off of the gym. And I won’t have to go the gym for this :D .

  6. I admire everyone who can wake up and go to a 6 a.m spin class! :D

  7. lisaou11 says:

Thats a hefty goal! I try to do a 100 push ups a day! its fun!

  8. Kelly says:

I think I can do 20 boy push ups and that is it…ugh!

  9. lizzieloutx says:

I would like to partially join that challenge ;^) Since I can barely do 10 girlie push ups from the knees (with pretty good form) I will get that number up to 40 a day by the end of this month! Thanks for the push :o ) ~ Liz

  10. great goal! i’m actually focusing on my pushups too. i go chest to ground, pec to deck. max set for me is 13, with perfect form and no sagging. you’ll get it! i finally got a pullup!

  11. Ugh push ups! In high school, I missed that president’s fitness award thing because I couldn’t do enough push ups. Then I’d watch the boys do 50 like it was no big deal!

  12. Shannon says:

I’m in for your challenge-I’m on a break from bootcamp where we do a ton of pushups and after 3 weeks I can tell I’m losing strength! I go back Aug 2nd-I need to be ready to go!

  13. yumyucky says:

push it, girl! when you focus on push ups, you do progress rather quickly. Squeezing out that last rep can be a mind-thing sometimes. Mind over push-up!

  14. Dudette, that’s a great idea! I’ll join ya – I’m just beginning a workout regime that includes one day where the workout consists near entirely of push ups and chin ups – neither of which I can do. Yet.

    Grrl Power! :)

  15. I have that same mug from anthropologie- love that store! Oh and I obsessed with your red bowls too – red is the accent color to my living room!

I actually had the same push-up problem too. I started doing p90x a little while back and before I knew it I was a rockstar at push-ups. p90x incorporates A LOT of push-ups and pull-ups so I guess I just got better by doing them over and over. Well what I am trying to say is… if I could learn how to do a push-up- then you def can!!!!

Yesterday was my last day with my students- I am free for summer too now! No more being jealous of you haha ;)

  16. That’s an awesome challenge! I have such weak arms that I can’t do a single push up either!! You can do it!!

  17. Meg says:

That’s an awesome goal :) And I’m SO jealous you went spinning, I went to my last spin class in San Fran yesterday :( gonna miss it so much!

  18. Tori says:

Girl, I can’t do a push up to save my life! I can do the girlie push ups all day though Haha :)
Good luck with that! Just think how toned your arms will be after!
    <3 Tori

  19. grace says:

awesome! i can barely do 1 push up!

  20. Jenna says:

Heck yes for upper body strength! I *was* probably one of the weakest people you know a few months ago. Then I started incorporating yoga, and now strength training into my routine, and now I feel POWERFUL. Good luck, you can do it!

  21. Natalie says:

mmm watermelon and coffee! two of my favorites.

i can kind of do a pushup but im not sure it’s a “real” or correctly done one, meaning, i can’t touch my nose to the ground without collapsing (is that necessary? i’m not sure) but its something i really need to work on too!!! for now, i stick with girly pushups and i STILL hate doing those!!! keep us posted on the pushup endeavors =) great encouragement for the rest of us

  22. Meg says:

I was just thinking how wimpy my pushups are! So yes, I will join you in your quest to to 25 push-ups by the end of the month. Though that is pretty scary. :) Way to raise the bar!

  23. emily says:

I can’t even do a knee one right now! But I think I’ll join you in the challenge, I’ll just be shooting for 10!

  24. lowandbhold says:

That’s a great challenge! I’m getting pretty decent at real pushups from going to Body Pump. It’s so empowering!

  25. Wonderful goal! I will definitely join you in challenging myself with pushups. My upper body strength is laughable at the moment.
P.S. LOVE your coffee mug! Where is it from?

  26. jqlee says:

thats awesome and dont be intimidated. you can totally do it!!

  27. Jen says:

I can’t do a push up either! Every time I get to that section on my work out DVD’s, I tend to skip that part. I’m going to join you on this challenge!!

  28. inmytummy says:

I cannot do pushups either. Not one. I might join your challenge.

  29. Justine says:

Chatarungas (sp?) are a noce little primer for push ups! I love that you’re making challenges for not only yourself, but also inviting others to join. That’s so thoughtful of you!

    Happy push-upping :)

  30. I can’t do push-ups either! It’s been a goal, sitting in the back of my brain, for some time now. I would love to strengthen up my arms. :D

Love your watermelon breakfast!! So fresh and summery. :D

  31. eatmovelove says:

Oh God…I can’t do 3…so sad…one time I used to be able to do at least 10…:(…oh well, one day?

  32. you can make you push up goal! I suggest doing some planks as well..that will REALLY help. I have a little story of this myself: being the smallest girl in highschool..no one thought I would be able to do the push ups at the end of the year..well little did everyone know that I do YOGA 3x a week..and I did 50 push ups without stopping..I was proud. If I can do it..you can!! ..it may take time..good luck!!!

  33. Cara says:

    That’s a great goal.
    I am a push-up looser…I can’t do them either.
    Small steps I guess…you’ll get there :)

  34. Chelsey says:

I do girly push ups – I should join you because my arms are a little weak these days!

  35. kbwood says:

GREAT GOAL!! I cannot do a pull up!! haha

  36. [...] Push-up progress: I did 35 incline push-ups on my coffee table today. Baby steps. [...]

  37. I’m so excited for you with your push-up challenge. You will be totally amazed at how quickly you improve!

  38. Ahh I love watermelon. It’s amazing stuff! Your homemade trail mixes are always so creative. :)

  39. [...] Push-up-progress: I can now do 16 real push-ups in a row! I am actually surprised at how quickly I have improved. To build up to this, I have been doing between 30-40 real push-ups a day (sometimes incline push-ups on my coffee table if I’m feeling weak), but scattered into sets of 10s, 8s, and 4s. I love seeing progress so quickly, but for some reason – I have a really hard time motivating myself to actually do them. I usually remember when I’m watching TV at night – and then I just break them up throughout a TV show…better than nothing! [...]
