I say ‘no’ to oats.

The problem with oats…

Is that they make me hungrier then I was before I ate them. I know I’ve been through this before – but every few months, I try them again – and without fail, I finish the bowl feeling famished. This bowl should have done the trick: banana, sweet potato, ½ cup oats, almond milk, flax cereal, peanut butter, chocolate peanut butter.

But even when the bowl tips the scales at over 400 calories, like this one did, I’m left with a growling tummy. I was furious with my breakfast (even thought it was tasty) and had to eat a bowl of cereal before leaving so that I didn’t keel over from starvation on my walk to work. Stupid oats.

Lunch was light, but held me over nicely. Better than the oats.

Rice noodles in broth with pieces of chicken – all leftovers from last night.

Plus another pink lady in a sweater. (I still can’t get over how awesome that sweater is)

After the kiddos left for the day, I had my favorite bar for snack.

These are so stinkin’ good. (Especially propped up on my Dr. Seuss mug)

For dinner, I had a big fat bowl of roasted veggies with hummus.

Cauliflower, eggplant, zucchini, red onion, broccoli, carrots, green beans – tossed in evoo and garlic, then roasted at 425* for 45 minutes. Perfection.

In the 3rd grade world…

A water pipe in the ceiling of my classroom broke today.

Spewing water through the ceiling (and the lights!!) all over the floor and the kid’s desks. Thank the Lord that the students were not in the room (…can you imagine?!) I left school around 5:15 and the plumber still hadn’t showed up. I’m just hoping my classroom is back in working order tomorrow at 7am!

Sorry about the oats. :( I was drooling over that bowl. It’s funny how foods have different effects on people. I can tell you that that bowl of oats would have sat like a brick in my stomach for hours upon hours.

The sweater is adorable. I’m actually off to make a bowl of ‘baked apples’. Have a wonderful evening!

  2. Kim says:

I love that you can even deal with third graders on a normal day. I’d be ripping my hair out within an hour, I’m sure.

Also, oats never fill me up either and I don’t get why people like them for breakfast so much.

  3. Leianna says:

Crazy with the water pipe happening not when they were there! Oatmeal does nothing for me as well. I go with bread, nut butter and grapefruit every morning, love!
Those sweaters are the cutest thing ever, may need to get one for my mom who is a teacher and my MIL who is a professor:) Great Christmas idea, thanks!

  4. lowandbhold says:

Oats fill me up but there are some foods (like cold cereal) that just NEVER EVER can.

Your noodle lunch bowl looks so good right now for some reason. I want it.

Hope you classroom is fixed up tomorrow!

  5. It’s weird how our bodies react to different foods.
I am the same as you…give it about an hour after oats and I hear my stomach roaring at me. Have you tried adding more of a protein source?

  6. Carol Reynolds says:

OK – That apple sweater is the cutest thing I’ve seen in awhile! Love it!

  7. I can’t believe oats don’t fill you up! They are one of the heartiest breakfasts for me. Hope your classroom is fixed by the morning!

  8. I have a similar problem with oats. I make Bob’s Red Mill gluten free hot cereal and that has much more staying power in my stomach. I think in general foods with a mushy consistency never fill me up.

  9. I know sort of how you feel about oats- my oatmeal in the morning is by far one of the biggest caloric meals I have- but somedays I totally wish I could have more!

  10. Faith says:

Are you kidding? To me oats are the most filling breakfast I can have!!! It’s one of the most satiating things I can pull together – seriously, I can go 5-6 hours after a good bowl before even thinking about the next meal!

  11. No oats? Blasphemy!!! :)

I’m sorry about the pipe – that has to be frustrating!!!

  12. The Pancake Girl says:

Oh man, I know what you mean about the oats- it’s always been pretty hit or miss with me. Most of the time (usually with the perfect amount of milk to make them thick and fluffy, and loads of pb) I am just fine with them these days… but sometimes- no dice. And it’s SO frustrating when bfast doesn’t do its job.

Have a great night missy! I want to try that book you mentioned on my blog, btw!

I feel the same way about oats! 500 calorie bowl of oats does nothing for me, but give me a 250 calorie egg sandwich and it keeps me full for hours.

  14. hippierunner says:

Great job on walking to work! :) Hope those pipes get fixed! I bet the kids would find that way distracting.

  15. emily says:

Yikes, I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you!

  16. christina says:

they make you hungrier!?! that’s crazy. they fill me up for hours… love the apple sweater! hope all is well in the classroom tomorrow :)

  17. Britta says:

Oats make me hungry too!!! wtf?! and as soon as I start eating them regularly for breakfast it’s like..I get addicted to them, and then my belly starts to grow until I’ve had enough and have to quit them again. Oats are stupid >:|

  18. Oats actually STUFF me! No idea why – but that is so weird how if affects people differently.

  19. Nicole says:

Ugh, here’s to hoping those pipes get fixed. And I’m not a fan of oats generally either. They actually fill me up so that I’m super full… but I don’t feel satisfied. I’m not sure why, but I always end up wanting something else. So I usually stick to cereal. :)

  20. Hey Girl!
I’m so in love with that apple sweater that I put a picture of one on my facebook page and I’ve had one friend offer to MAKE me one :) Then, a mutural friend was like, “hey can you make me one, too?”
    You trendsetter you! ;)
I may have to put something on my blog about the awesomeness of the apple sweater.
    Just sayin’ :)

  21. Those oats look so delish! Sad they didn’t fill you up :( Isn’t it strange how nothing fills you up like soup? You’d think it would be the opposite….

    I want that apple sweater!

  22. Marina says:

I adore oats, but sometimes, they just aren’t enough.
Your veggie bowl looks really appetizing!

  23. edenseats says:

This is the reason I dont eat oats! but your bowl looks like dessert! I love it! That ceiling thing is weird, that happened once when I was in second grade and the kids screamed “The sky is falling!”

  24. A water pipe burst in my parents ceiling once. My mom was having a shower, and I was on the computer sitting directly under the pipe. I got to have a shower too. It was great fun.

  25. Laura says:

    Hi,
I’ve been reading your blog for a while, and I was wondering if you picture everything you eat? For example, a few days ago it seemed that you had only a smoothie, salad, fruit and watermelon. I love reading about the various foods you have, and I really like your blog!

  26. Sana says:

OH no!!! I hope everything was fixed up for today! i am glad no kiddos we wet in the process!

  27. lisaou11 says:

that would have been absolute chaos!

and I love your apples sweater! she’ll appreciate that when it gets cold!

  28. I’ll take the oats you don’t want ;) . But you have to come make them for me, because mine never look as prettylicious as yours!

  29. Justine says:

I hear you on the oats! It doesn’t matter how much volume, fat, protein, fiber is in it- there is just no satisfaction other than happy tastebuds. I would be very interested to know the science behind that, if there was any.

I have been having cold cereal lately, and even though I love it I am hungry about an hour later. I’m pretty much a bottomless pit in the mornings. :)

  30. Oats fill me up somewhat, but not any more than regular cereal. To be honest, I don’t quite understand when people talk about how filling they are!! Hoping your classroom is up and running by tomorrow!

  31. janetha g. says:

ugh, sorry about the plumbing disaster! i love that specific bar, i wish i had a cute dr seuss mug lol. i still cant get over the sweater either!

  32. Oatmeal is just disgusting to me. There I said it. I’m an outcast in the blog world.

  33. [...] thanks for your well wishes with my raining room yesterday, all was fixed by 7:30 this [...]

  34. Kat says:

I just adore roasted veggie dinners.

Personally, I find that overnight oats are more filling than regular oats – have you had a chance to test out that theory?

  35. Cyndi says:

I know exactly how you feel! Next to cereal, oats are the least filling breakfast I can eat. I’m usually starving within 2-3 hours of eating them, even if I add a good dose of extra protein to them. A nice egg omelet on the other hand (which has the same number of calories as the oatmeal) will keep me full for 5-6 hours…

  36. Lena says:

I find that oats don’t hold me for as long as if i were to eat eggs and toast, or cheese toast, or uncle sam’s cereals. other cereals don’t hold out too. wonder why?

  37. [...] is making a major comeback in my life. It still doesn’t fill me up at all, but it tastes so dang good, and I eat around the clock anyway – it doesn’t seem to [...]
