Let’s talk about breakfast. Mmmkay?

I eat at least two of them every day. I am ravenous in the morning. When people say that breakfast holds them over for 3 hours (or more!) I am baffled. Just baffled. I could eat from the moment I get up until lunchtime and never get full.

You think I’m kidding.

(pause: can we talk about this pretty new bowl? Janeetha just sent it to me…she is the most thoughtful person I know)

But I usually wake up, work out, drink a bunch of water…and then start eating. This morning I had a big bowl of hot amaranth and was still famished. So I drank a lot more water and a cup of coffee, fed Adrienne, then came downstairs to eat this bowl.

  • Uncle Sam’s Flax Cereal
  • puffed millet
  • roasted almonds
  • raisins
  • chocolate chips
  • almond butter
  • applesauce
  • flax

Heavenly cereal mush.

Guys, I’m still so hungry you can audibly hear my stomach rumbling. And don’t you dare tell me I need more protein – I tell you, nothing, NOTHING fills me up in the morning. I’ve tried it all.

It’s a good thing lunch is in an hour.

Is there a time of day when you feel like a bottomless pit?

  1. It seems like I get like that when I stay up at night.. I just feel really snacky and end up munching here and there.. Its kind of annoying- because I can’t really sleep if I’m hungry! That bowl is adorable and the cereal looks amazing :)

    Your cereal concoction looks incredibly similar what I used to eat when I was singing in Germany. Every morning I would have a bowl of dried muesli, raisins, nuts, yogurt, honey, sometimes applesauce… a little bit of everything to satisfy the bazillion craving I have in the morning!

  3. I am the same. Nothing fills me up. I usually eat two to three times in the morning, when I’m at home. I just can’t stand the hunger :) )
    Sometimes savory breakfasts do fill me up, but, usual oats or overnight oats, nop. Like I haven’t eaten anything :)

  4. I tend to feel like a bottomless pit in the morning as well. Once I got done with my breakfast, I kept thinking.. “that’s it?” And remember you’re nursing right now too – which makes you hungrier or so I’ve heard!

    I’ve definitely had bottomless pit days. I tend to just go with them until they pass (cause they always do) – but it’s super annoying to be interrupted by hunger all the time!

  6. So many days when I feel like a bottomless pit. I am learning to listen to my HUNGEr.. and realize when it is hunger. Sometimes I mistake the old pit that is often my stomach as a binge. But often.. I legit am hungry. Learning and working every day.. probably for the rest of my life.

  7. Very yummy looking breakfast! I am always hungry too but it takes me about an hour after waking up and then it’s food all morning.

  8. i have those days at random. im not a wake up and eat person at all though. it takes my whole body a while to start the day…including my metabolism evidently. cereal never holds me over very long though. i typically roll with 6 bowls as one serving.

  9. Anytime between lunch and dinner! I work a different schedule so my lunch time varies, however I always try to eat at the same time. Yet that then leaves me with wanting to eat before it’s time for dinner! I have been getting much better and been packing little snacks to help tide me over and I have also been working on drinking more water in an attempt to not hear the grumblings!

    May I ask, how did you come up with/find these recipes? That cereal looks so amazingly delicious! I have recently started my health journey and am trying to find great alternatives to my normal breakfast.

    I’m always surprised by people talking about breakfast keeping them full for an hour or 4 too, as soon as I start to eat in the morning the hunger just kicks in and it will stay there till lunch, nothing helps!

  11. I’m so happy to read that I’m not the only one who is hungry again an hour or so after breakfast. I wake up starving and I can eat a huge hearty bowl of oats topped with peanut butter and whatever else, and I’m still hungry soon after.

    Your bowl of cereal looks soooo good. I need to try something like that. Although I know I’ll still be hungry. ;-)

  12. What a delicious breakfast! And I can totally relate to this post…I am always such a bottomless pit in the mornings! What’s up with that?! Even after breakfast I’m wondering when lunch is, ha! After lunch I seem to be fine until dinner rolls around, but I don’t know what is up between breakfast and lunch…I always need that mid morning snack!

  13. i’m the exact same way in the morning!! and since i’m a teacher i really can’t be eating non-stop like i often want to so i did a lot of experimentation and found that the only thing that seems to keep me full is a lot of certain kinds of fat (nut butter doesn’t work at all for me, i could a jar of it in one sitting no prob). i eat full fat yogurt every morning with some fruit and sunflower seed butter. it works so well. i was full until 1:30pm today which is CRAZY.

  15. I know how you feel — I usually have to have a snack in the morning, especially if I exercise. And sometimes that snack comes in the form of lunch part 1 haha. Your (2nd) breakfast looks lovely, though. At least you’re eating nutritiously dense foods! Even if they don’t seem dense to your tummy…

  16. I’m not that hungry in the morning, usually because I’m exercising then and don’t notice it. What I could never do is go from Lunch at 1 to dinner at 6:30 and not eat at least a full meal if not two in between. I just NEED food in the afternoon, especially 3-4.

  17. That is EXACTLY how I feel everday. And I get very frustrated because I feel like I have to eat alllll the time and I work and just don’t have the time. I also feel like a freak of nature. I wish lunchtime was around 11. But, I have noticed that when I have a breakfast protein shake in the morning I don’t feel so starving all day long. Now, do I have one of those every morning? Nope, because sometimes I just can’t get it together in the morning. I am very happy that I am not the only one who has multiple snacks before lunch. And when I say multiple, I mean around 4.

  18. I love your applesauce idea! I’m a teacher too and it seems like I’m starving as soon as I get home! If I eat dinner right away, I’m just super hungry later! So I end up snacking like crazy!

  19. This reminds me when people say nuts keep them full! I legit need to consume eight times the normal portion size to even become satisfied! I’ve never tried apple sauce on cereal and now I think I need to especially if chocolate chips are involved

  20. ya know why I love your food and blog…because you always make the simplest dishes but they always look so complex and delicious!! i love the idea of applsauce as the binder to all of the goodness in that bowl…I havent had applesauce in ages! YUM so so so good!

  22. I am usually a bottomless pit around 3:00. I eat a snack and a big snack too! I always aim for around 300-400 calories and around 15 grams of fat. And I am always chomping at the bit for dinner…always. I have tried it all too. More fiber, more protein, more fat, less sugar, etc. etc. etc. and it never seems to work.

  23. Your post reminded me of YAPPLESAUCE! I used to always mix applesauce with yogurt for breakfast–it was born when I had my tonsils out and couldn’t eat anything solid. I have a hard time getting full sometimes, I am a definite volume eater. I find that I get most full in the AM with smoothies that have a LOT of liquid, I think it fills up my belly.
