It’s Monday. We could all use some coffee, right?
Even those of us who don’t go to work on Mondays can use a little something special in the coffee department, I think.
There hasn’t been a whole lot of sleeping going on at our house lately. I blame the shift in weather.
I can’t sleep when it’s cold.
Meeker can’t sleep when it’s hot.
We keep the heater on (for Adrienne). We keep our windows open and the fan on in our room for Meeker. I wear a snowsuit to bed.
Unfortunately, I think Baby A inherited my disdain for cold-weather sleeping. Therefore, she hasn’t slept well since our little snowstorm last Friday night. Which means none of us have slept well since Friday…including Punky and Bagheera.
So, I’m drinking coffee. Well, I always drink coffee – but this is special.
I brewed it in milk. It tasted like a latte you’d get at Starbucks.
Ingredients:
- 3 T ground coffee
- 1 cinnamon stick (or a teaspoon of ground cinnamon)
- 1 1/2 C milk (I used cow’s milk, but almond, soy, coconut – it would all work)
- Any other flavorings you want (I used some peppermint sugar)
Warm the milk in a saucepan. Put the coffee, cinnamon, and whatever other flavorings you want into the French press. Slowly pour the milk in and press down a couple of inches so the coffee is submerged. Let stand for 6-8 minutes then press down the rest of the way and pour.
You could probably do this in a regular coffee maker, too – I’m just too lazy to clean milk out of a coffee maker. So I French pressed it.
Enjoy your Monday.

hold the phone.. peppermint vanilla bean sugar?! yum. using milk in the french press is a wonderful idea!
Yeah it’s kind of awesome. It was in my Christmas stocking last year.
agreed! Why didn’t I think of this?!?
My exact first reaction! Why haven’t I heard about peppermint vanilla bean sugar?!?!?!
Well, now you have. No excuses. Go get yourself some.
That sounds perfect for cold weather and sleepless nights. That peppermint vanilla bean sugar! Wow. Where did you get that?
It was in my Christmas stocking last year. It is from a spice shop here called Savory. They sell it online, too!
Thank you, I will check into it.
I need a gallon of that today!
Brewing in milk is genius! I made oatmeal with coffee this morning and felt pretty smart but making coffee with milk is way smarter
I hope you guys get in some good naps today to make up for sleep!
Hold on here…oatmeal with coffee? That is genius.
agreed! will be trying that tomorrow…
Um, this is genius. I’m doing this tomorrow. (aka RIGHT NOW)
that looks FABULOUS!! oh i love sleeping when its cold…i gather up all of the blankets and get surrounded with pillows and rarely wake up! its perfection!
I always think of you when I talk about coffee on the blog…I know you love it!
Brilliant idea! Confession- I have a French press, and the only one who has actually used it in my kitchen, has been penpal whenever he’s been over… I really need to get around to using it myself.
Haha, you should have him make this for you!
WOW! I can’t wait to try this. Peppermint vanilla bean sugar? Who thought of that and where do I get some??
It’s from a spice shop we have here called “Savory” – but bet you could find it online!
YUM! I don’t drink coffee (gasp) but this sure does look good!!
This looks super yummy, and I agree Monday = coffee treat. Where did you get the peppermint sugar?
We have the same sleeping issue – C likes it to be downright hot in the bedroom, I can’t sleep if it’s hot. So, we’ve settled with turning the heat down at night to save costs and having 2 fans on in the bedroom so I can sleep – and having 3 blankets on the bed so C can sleep. Compromise
That sounds like the perfect cup of coffee! I am sorry you aren’t sleeping well. Not fun!
Um, yum! I can’t sleep when it’s hot – summer is the worst!
Brilliant.
I have a French Press but I’m too chicken to use it. And I’m with ya on the no sleeping. It’s still hot in FL but Baby Tyler just doesn’t rest well at night. Oh well…coffee for all of us!
That is a beautiful cup of coffee. I need to buy a French press, or a smaller coffee pot…
Happy Monday!
Coffee, oh sweet sweet caffeine – the only thing that makes me forget the sleep deprivation!
I’m not a coffee drinker, but this looks really good to me right about now. Tired at our house as well….kids are sleeping well, just up early when mama isn’t getting to bed very early. You’d think I would have learned by now???
Those hours after bedtime are so wonderfully relaxing and productive…I can never get to bed early enough. I don’t want to waste that time sleeping!
What wonderful coffee ideas. This is good. I will do this.
Your coffee looks a.m.a.z.i.n.g.!!! Oh my goodness did I need a cup of that this morning. Sometimes middle schoolers get the best of me. But this, this would cure that in a heartbeat!
Hah, I think middle schoolers would ALWAYS get the best of me. Here’s to hoping you got some coffee!
This looks wonderful! I can’t wait to try this. Where did you get your french press? I just broke ours a few weeks ago and we are sorely missing it.
What a great idea. I feel like we’ve been fighting a losing battle with sleep for months! I don’t think I can blame it one the weather.
Ugh, so sorry. A has been so on and off with sleep…some good weeks, some bad. Do you put him down awake and let him “cry it out” – that’s what people always tell me I need to be consistent with, but it breaks my heart!
I want some of that peppermint sugar!!
Oh my gosh – that looks INcredible!! I want to be there in your cold/hot house drinking it with you!! Also? I need a french press – all the more reason just to move in with you
I really want to get a press but this just motivated me to go out and get it ASAP. Using milk is a brilliant idea. Yum!

Yum! That looks like such a good cold weather treat! I’m also cold-blooded. I sit under a heated blanket at work all day, and still freeze. It’s miserable.
Stopping in from How Sweet it Is. Jessica is right, this looks delicious! Trying it tomorrow morning. Thank goodness for the french press!
Also stopping in from How Sweet It Is- this looks amazing! I love coffee with lots of milk anyway. Will have to try it. Excited to have found your blog!
I think you just convinced me to bring my French Press back into action. man…this is going to be my winter drink.
French presses are the bomb! I’m not a huge coffee drinker, and I still love mine. I never thought to brew it with milk though…
What a great idea! I can’t believe I’ve never heard of this before! Sounds way better than paying $5 for a Starbucks latte (but sometimes you just have to!). Thanks for sharing
I agree, sometimes you have to…but when you don’t, this is the ticket.
Wonderful idea! Not a fan of the S******** coffee (Peet’s rules!), I do love French Press coffee. Rarely do I bother, however. I shall do this tomorrow with half low-fat milk, half-water as my fav coffee in the world is cafe cortado from Spain: espresso with a dab of steamed milk. Stronger and less milky than cafe au lait/latte, can hardly wait. BTW, never tried coffee in oatmeal but love a dab of instant espresso in nonfat greek yogurt. And that peppermint vanilla sugar on top would be killer. Thanks.

As the others have said, this is an excellent idea. I used to order chai latte at the Good Earth here in Calgary and it was always served milk based in a press. I haven’t thought of that in ages and I love your recipe! I’ll be on the hunt for some of that sugar as well…
Tried this yesterday and made it into a pumpkin spice latte. It was amazing! Thanks for the coffee inspiration
