I’ve already told you guys that my mama used to embrace the mess. Especially when it came to kids.
One of my (thousands of) happy memories while growing up is my mom letting me sit on the back patio and play with a bowl of flour and a bowl of water.
This weekend I was missing my mama terribly and Adrienne was being particularly wiggly…as one year olds usually are. I decided to pay a little tribute to her grammy with a good old fashioned flour + water (and some Israeli couscous) session.
I brought my book out thinking I would read a little while she played, but I’ll tell you what…she was so intrigued and inquisitive, it was utterly fascinating. I couldn’t take my eyes (or my camera) off of that curious little girl.
So here’s to flour and water…and to life being a little messy.

I LOVE that you let your baby A get all messy and just have fun. I hope I’m just like that when I’m a mom someday!!
You are the world’s greatest mom! I love it. You obviously had a mama that taught you well and I know she was watching you and Adrienne this weekend smiling down on her two girls with pride, laughter and eternal love.
She looks so very serious about her “work”. This is such a great idea!! If Lyric is anything like me she’ll go out to play in a mud pit and come back with a still-clean dress and just a few dirty fingers. As a baby I would crawl around in my mom’s friend’s art gallery picking lint off the floor & handing it to her. Never said I was normal!
I love these pictures. She looks like she is having a wonderful time!
I absolutely love this idea! What kid wouldn’t love this sloppy mess of ingredients that are also safe to ingest and won’t burn their eyes!? Throw some yeast in there next time and she’ll make bread!
Hugs to you!
aw I love this, the pictures are adorable as usual!
I just love this! She is so fascinated and focused! Too cute for words.
What a good mommy you are! I need to let my kids do messy things more often. Thanks for the inspiration!
and it did both your hearts good
Hugs!
This is so precious – I absolutely love it.
A beautiful mess! And I just love that last photo.
Messes are great. And edible messes are even better! I know we’ve never met, but I also had a loss this spring and the Hurt and the Healer has meant a lot to me. I heard it this weekend and thought of you, too. Saying a prayer for your hurt and thanksgiving for the Healer!
exactly–a beautiful mess. love it.
i love getting to watch her learn through these pictures! what a beautiful tribute to your wonderful momma and her sweet grandbaby
Love this post. Makes me excited for my own mama’s visit, and nostalgic for childhood. Always, always, always embrace the mess, friend!
I especially love the spatula she uses! Super cute!
i love her (and you) to bits.
No lie, I was thinking about you all weekend. Prayed for you on my run Saturday and at church yesterday. I hope you felt it. And I really hope that I can “embrace the mess” as well as you do all the time. You are my hero.
This will definitely go into the rank of favorite posts.
I was thinking about you guys this weekend (and I mean that in the least creepy way possible!). Glad to see you and baby A were enjoying the sunshine. Flour & water, I would have never thought! Genius idea. Your mama was a smart woman.
I absolutely adore the way Adrienne looks so serious and concentrated on her tasks, then at the end that look of pure accomplishment. What a ham.
why did this make me cry?!!?
i miss you so badly. i wish we were raising our kids together.
Love this! I’m sure your wonderful mama was smiling down as she watched
Wow, you have some seriously good Mom genes in your family! This is such a sweet post and a wonderful tribute to your mom.
I used to do something like this as a kid, though I remember there being some cornstarch and food coloring in the mix and it was reeeal goopy stuff.
As always, she is adorable and you came up with a great idea!
The best yet of Baby A! Thank you so much for sharing!
I absolutely love this! You are such a great mama!!!
Your baby has the BEST mama in the world. Seriously, I can’t wait to do this with little ones some day!
I’ll bet your mom is smiling at all of this right now. (((HUGS)))
And let me tell you, I am taking notes for when I have my own kids someday. Flour and water and a sunny afternoon. I love it (Baby A obviously did too!!)
I love this.. So simple and obviously so much fun for little A. A perfect way to honor your mom
Beautiful post, Katie. You’re carrying on a legacy through your daughter and it’s hard to hear about you missing your mom; I feel the pain and can’t imagine how hard it must be, but how neat that you used that feeling and good memories to honor your mom and give your daughter a great play time! I’m inspired by you and think of you often during this time…thanks for allowing us to walk through it even a little bit with you. And, though it doesn’t need to be said, man is Baby A adorable!
Just. freaking. shoot. me.
Especially that last photo. Look at that attitude in the hip!
Give her an extra big squeeze for me today!
oh, so dang cute! what a nice way to honor and remember your mom
I think this is the best philosophy ever. Little people need to get dirty anyways! You might as well do it in a controlled manor with awesome things – what beats flour and water?!
I think she gets cuter by the second. Wait, make that millisecond.
This is just way to adorable. I’m going to try it with my little man right now. Thank you!!
favorite post of my life. hands down.
[...] I don’t want you to think Kyle and I are crazy stalkers, but we are both very much in love with Katie’s cute little family. And texts like the above are not uncommon. I mean seriously, how can you not melt?? [...]
