cream salt

Adrienne loves butter. Loves, loves, loves. Usually, when she wakes up in the morning and I ask her what she wants for breakfast, her answer is butter (or milk, or cheese, or yogurt). She’s kind of into dairy. When I told her that all of her favorite foods were made from cow’s milk…she was confused. After I explained it (if you have a toddler you’ll know what’s coming next!)…

Why? why? why? why? why? like a broken record one hundred million bazillion times and no answer I gave her was good enough.

So I showed her.

We filled a baby food jar half full with heavy cream, added a little salt (totally optional) and screwed the lid on tightly. Then we took turns shaking and shaking and shaking (and dancing and jumping) until little lumps of yellow butter started forming (it took about six minutes). Then we poured out the excess liquid whey and voila! Homemade butter (and some welcome silence, her questioning on pause for a few minutes) for breakfast.
