(he just had a spoonful of whipped cream…but he loved every lick!)
We’ve been up to our eyeballs in commitments lately. All things I want to do, all fun things, but so many things! Yesterday we were hurrying out the door (alwaaays) and Adrienne was laying on the floor in her underwear and I was yelling hurry, hurry, hurry get dressed! and she was rolling around crying and I just thought…what the heck. Why am I doing this to my children?
Especially in this season, it’s so easy to get busy. And that’s not necessarily bad, but this last year has taught me so much about just being instead of always doing. However, this holiday season arrived and I forgot how content I can be when I stop striving. So, I made a quick phone call (with Adrienne still rolling around on the floor) and canceled our commitment (which I really did want to attend, but…my priorities were basically slapping me in the face at this point) and had a hot chocolate party instead. I used my basic hot chocolate recipe (but scaled back the sugar because I knew we’d be adding plenty of sweetness with the toppings!) and then we went to town with the toppings.
Ahhh, yes. I think I’m really a housecat in my heart. (also, what fun date night in this would make!)
basic hot chocolate
- 2.5 cups of your choice of milk
- 3 T cocoa powder, unsweetened
- 2 T sugar*
(*If you’re not doing toppings, I would suggest adding a bit more sugar!)
In a small saucepan, add about half a cup of the milk, and then the cocoa powder and the sugar. Whisk until a thick mixture comes together. Then slowly add the rest of the milk and keep whisking until it is hot enough to your liking. Then add toppings…whee!
- whipped cream (homemade is my favorite!)
- sanding sugar
- candy canes for stirring
