boy reading

We are lucky enough to be family friends with the super kind and hilarious children’s book author, Justin Matott. I don’t know why I’d never thought to connect with him about doing a giveaway here before, but we met last week for some coffee (he bought my kids doughnuts…winning!) and gave us a couple of books to enjoy and tell you all about.

This first one right here is called Aliens ALL MIXED UP. The format is so fun! Each page has three sections where you can mix and match each illustration. We’ve had so much fun creating new aliens (Jesse really just likes the flipping part). It almost reminds me of playing with paper dolls. And the writing is entertainingly clever (I mean, there’s an alien named CurlyMoeLarry Chicken in there, you guys).  It’s one of those books that mamas enjoy reading just as much as the kiddos.

Oh and this next one. I can’t even count the number of times we’ve read it since it landed in our hands last week.

miss spell

The first read through Miss Spell was a little rough because the entire book is full of homophones and Adrienne didn’t really get it. But after we read it the second time and I explained all the word play, she was howling with laughter. Over and over and over we have read and delighted in this exceptionally clever writing.

Adrienne was actually reading it to me one evening and I had heard it so many times I just fell fast asleep, my head on her shoulder. She kept waking me up saying Get it mama, get it? Hare, not hair??! and I would stir, and we’d laugh together and then I would nod back off and she’d keeping reading. I think when your kid takes over like that…it’s probably the sign of a good book.

(Oh, and even cooler…it was such a good introduction for the concept of a homophone for a four year old. Would also be perfect for second/third graders who are practicing the concept. You could even have them create their own to add onto the book…there goes my teacher brain, getting all excited.)
